The Cooper’s Betrayal

The Cooper’s Betrayal
A career interrupted
At Cooper’s Magazine, Shani is fired after Eva passes along a private remark Shani made about the workplace. The dismissal happens publicly and destroys an important reporting opportunity.
A new direction
Lynn offers an explanation involving OBGs and a resistance network. Shani leaves Boston for New York, cutting off social media and changing her appearance.
She enters the Resistance with a journalist’s curiosity and a newly personal reason to distrust polished workplace behavior.
A New City, Old Suspicions

A New City, Old Suspicions
Starting over at a café
Shani takes a low-status job at Rise & Grind Café while following the Resistance’s rules. The work is far from the journalism career she had expected to build.
Recognizing Eva
When Eva appears as a customer, Shani recognizes the woman who helped get her fired. She takes a photograph and reports the sighting to Lynn.
Shani’s attempt at a fresh start is overtaken by the old betrayal and the possibility that the same scheme is still operating.
A Misgiving About Orders

A Misgiving About Orders
The cost of obedience
Shani monitors Nella and Hazel but doubts Lynn’s refusal to act. She has already watched the Resistance’s rules keep its members cautious while OBGs continue to advance.
A personal limit
Shani tells Lynn that she wants to do more than observe and report. Her resentment is sharpened by what happened to her at Cooper’s and by her fear that Nella will suffer the same kind of betrayal.
The conflict does not make Shani abandon the group, but it makes disobedience increasingly likely.
Abduction and Release

Abduction and Release
Going beyond her assignment
Shani contacts Nella and tries to meet her near Broadway despite Lynn’s orders. Lynn’s surveillance catches the move, but the warning comes too late to prevent Shani from being taken into a car.
A narrow return
Kendra Rae helps secure Shani’s release. The experience gives Shani a direct connection to the history behind the Resistance’s suspicions.
Shani survives, but the rescue does not resolve her argument with Lynn about whether secrecy is still serving anyone.
The Exposé Sent

The Exposé Sent
A journalist’s decision
At Scope Magazine, Shani prepares an article about OBGs using records, conversations, and the history Kendra has shared. She hesitates because disclosure could expose people and derail a plan she barely understands.
A compromised fresh start
Shani sends the piece, but her intended editor has left and the email bounces. A new interim editor, Nella under another identity, immediately asks to speak with her.
The attempted exposé becomes a cliff edge: Shani has chosen public truth, but the new encounter may return her to the same conflict.
